Why the Army keeps picking Kopin
Sole-source, a second award, and the kind of part every headset needs.
Most of the stocks on my trade board are quick shots: in on the news, out on the pop. Kopin (KOPN) is the first one I put on the conviction shelf. Buy it, hold it, let it age. Here's my thinking.
Sole-source means no bidding war
Kopin is the sole-source supplier of color MicroLED displays for U.S. Army programs: the tiny screens inside soldier and pilot head-up displays. The Army didn't shop it around. It went straight to Kopin.
The second award, not the first
The new $18.6 million award under the Army's IBAS program is the second one, and it brings that program's total to about $34 million. Earlier in 2026 Kopin also landed a $21.5 million order for thermal and night-vision eyepieces. When the government keeps coming back to the same company, that builds a floor.
The part everybody needs
The flashy names can't be bought. Anduril is private. Most smart-glasses brands don't trade in the US. Kopin makes the kind of part they all need. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey has said there won't be one winning military headset, more like dozens. If that's right, the supplier wins either way.
What could go wrong
Kopin isn't profitable yet, and some valuation services say the stock is priced ahead of itself. Its beta is around 3.5, which means it swings about three and a half times harder than the market. If a competitor wins the next award, or the government stops coming back, the thesis breaks and it comes off the shelf.
Price when I added it: about $4.20. It's on the scoreboard, and it stays there win or lose.
My opinions and paper trades, not financial advice. Small-cap stocks can lose value fast. Do your own homework.
